Abstract
(for English see below)

UPLIFT is a Horizon Europe innovation project (2026–2030) that will demonstrate, at the RINGEN energy research site in Litoměřice (Czech Republic), how multistage stimulation of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) can be implemented efficiently and safely in Europe using a pair of wells approximately 3.5 km deep.
In doing so, the consortium addresses key challenges of EGS technologies: reliably increasing well productivity in various geological settings, reducing induced seismicity—particularly in urban areas—cost-effectively implementing multi-stage stimulation measures, and increasing public acceptance.
To achieve these goals, we are developing and demonstrating novel drilling and stimulation concepts, including a micro turbine drilling system for improved reservoir development and adaptive stimulation strategies for safe and efficient permeability enhancement. In addition, laboratory and underground laboratory tests on the stimulation behavior of crystalline rocks are conducted, and various stimulation approaches are experimentally compared. High-resolution seismic monitoring methods and physics-based digital twins support real-time monitoring, risk assessment, and operational optimization.
UPLIFT thus combines European research and industrial expertise, as well as existing research infrastructures, with current international experience, particularly from the United States. In doing so, the project lays the foundation for the safe, economical, and socially acceptable use of petrothermal geothermal energy in Europe.
This article provides an overview of the project’s current status and outlines the planned next steps.
